Happy 2015! What an awesome 12 month sprint, as I look back at all of the things I’ve been fortunate to be a part of in the past year it is truly amazing.
I have some fun new tutorials for you all in the coming weeks, so stay tuned! In the mean time, I wanted to offer a quick and dirty solution to a common problem I’ve faced.
Financial Dimensions in AX 2012 are more complex than in previous releases. You can have unlimited number of dimensions, and the unique combination of values is stored as a Dimension Combination Set RecID, commonly known as DefaultDimension.
DefaultDimension is stored typically on master data, such as Customers, Vendors, Products, and so forth. Below is an example of default dimensions for a released product:
A common problem requires changing a single dimension value out of a set of dimensions. For example, say we wanted to change the BusinessUnit dimension to a new value for all products. I’ve seen several intricate jobs out there that you can run to make this work, but I’m lazy and don’t like digging up these complex scripts. Instead, let’s use the Excel Add-Ins to make our lives easier!
Assuming you have the Add-Ins installed from your Dynamics AX 2012 installation media, open Excel and connect to your AOS of choice:
Second, add the table in which you need to update the DefaultDimension values.
In the field editor, add all of the Key/Required fields, plus your dimension values. Change the values as you see fit, and witness that the other dimension values are left alone.
And that’s it! This is for System Administrators, if you need this capability for business users, you can create an AIF Document Service and add that to the Document Data Sources [ Organization Admin module -> Setup -> Documents ] form as well as add the requisite security privileges to their roles.
Cheers to another 12 month sprint!
